1. The beach
No trip to Bournemouth is complete without a day spent relaxing or playing on Bournemouth's golden sand. The perfect place to enjoy an afternoon picnic or to wrap up the day with a sizzling barbeque watching the sun set and taking in the picture-perfect view of the Isle of Wight and the distant horizon. However, if you prefer something a little more active the beach’s ready set up Volleyball net provides the perfect opportunity for some friendly competition and a chance to kill off some extra energy!
2. Central and Upper, Bournemouth Gardens, Tree Trail
If you want to add some education into your trip without the kids noticing then the tree trail in Bournemouth’s uniquely beautiful gardens is the ideal activity. Enjoy the calming atmosphere and spend time getting closer to nature, all whilst learning about the different types of trees making up the vibrant gardens in the heart of Bournemouth town centre. The trail takes approximately two hours leaving plenty of time to explore the rest of the gardens and lounge on the grass enjoying a picnic.
3. Lower Gardens
A place to let the kids run free in the nature before enjoying an ice cream from one the kiosks located in the gardens. Get up close and personal to the wildlife by heading to the Bournemouth Aviary bird sanctuary and admiring the multitude of different species of birds.
4. The Russell-Cotes outdoor Terrace Café and Museum Café
Situated in the light and airy modern wing of the museum, the Café is the perfect place to enjoy some refreshments, surrounded by art exhibited in the Café Gallery. The terrace is the perfect place to soak in the sea views, gardens and above all, relax. Admission to the Café and Café Gallery is without charge.
5. Boscombe Pier, Bouldering and Outside Gym
A stroll along the pier turned into a playground, a chance to burn off some extra energy by climbing to the top of the boulders or having a go on the outside gym. The ideal place to let the kids roam around the beach whilst you enjoy a pleasant stroll in the sunshine.
6. Hengistbury Head
With breath-taking views and a chance to fully explore the dramatic coastline a trip to Hengistbury Head is a must. The beach nearby provides the perfect relaxation spot after taking in the sights. Boasting spectacular coastal views, a nature reserve and a riverbank; Hengistbury Head is the perfect family trip, plus it's dog friendly.
7. Bournemouth Air Festival
Held every summer the Bournemouth Air Festival is a major highlight of the year. The family friendly event is four days filled with excitement and action with the perfect setting of Dorset’s Jurassic coast. There’s plenty to do with live music, military performance, fireworks and the red arrow display. No matter where you fit it in to your day there’s loads to get involved with.
8. The Upside Gallery
Found in Bournemouth’s central gardens toward the upper gardens and coy pond, explore this unique and permanent outdoor street art gallery featuring some of the UK’s most exciting and progressive artists from the graffiti & urban art scene. Featured artists have built their Internationally acclaimed reputation by pushing their art-form in new and exciting directions a free, beautiful, public art destination. the Upside Gallery presents this amazing diversity and talent in an environment that can perfectly capture the power of this growing art movement.
9. Alum Chine Tropical Gardens and Beach
Alum Chine offers the perfect place to relax away from the town centre. Located right next to the beach it offers shaded pathways, a children’s play area and a tropical garden on the cliff top the perfect setting to relax in the tranquil atmosphere. The blue flag beach, monitored by RNLI lifeguard stations in the summer months and provides the chance to cool off in the enticing blue sea or hold your own sandcastle competition.
10. Boscombe, Arts Trail
The Boscombe Arts Trail is a free walk starting in the shopping area of Boscombe, continuing down Sea Road and ending at Boscombe Pier. There are seven unique art pieces all provoking creativity and inspiration. The walk takes approximately 25 minutes and you can enjoy a well-deserved ice cream at the end on Boscombe Pier.
