About Us
Blending Salsa, Wing Chun, and diasporic dance styles, Okan is a groundbreaking production that explores themes of connection, ancestry, and the interplay of opposing forces.
At its core, Okan (meaning Oneness, Conscience, and Heart in Yoruba) is a celebration of harmony beyond binaries. Akeim Toussaint Buck and Ella Mesma craft a captivating duet that challenges gender norms and relationship dynamics through fluid movement and martial dance.
An Innovative Collaboration
Born from a collaboration with Thomas Tawala Presto of Tabanka Dance, Okan draws inspiriation from Tawala, a codified system of body movement. Combined with Salsa, Wing Chun, and Yoruban influences, this creates a striking performance. It is both deeply rooted in tradition and boldly contemporary.
