Pubs & Bars

Christchurch pubs and bars play a big part in the town’s culture, with many places contributing to other aspects of Christchurch life including the festivals and events. From the close-knit community of hospitality workers in the centre of town to the popular local haunts in nearby neighbourhoods, Christchurch hospitality makes for a lively and popular entertainment scene throughout the year.

Craft Beer

Christchurch has recently seen an increase in popularity for real ale and craft beer. Many of the traditional pubs serve a selection of real ales and some are part of CAMRA so be sure to ask if you’re a member. Local brewery Drop the Anchor which until recently was located at the Christchurch emporium, (it has now outgrown its humble roots and moved to a larger complex) sells its popular ales at The Snug in the town centre and the The Tuckton Tap Room on Tuckton Highstreet. Across the Christchurch Roundabout you will find the cosy but always busy Saxon Bar, a friendly local hangout selling real ales, craft beers and artisanal drinks and on the Highstreet The Crafty Tap offers tasty beers, ciders and fine wines.

Gin

The Gin scene is ever popular in Christchurch and no matter where you end up it’s always worth asking for a gin menu as many drinking establishments now embrace the craze. Keep an eye out for the likes of Conker, Ginjams, Pothecary, Lilliput and BH1 as they are all made locally.

Sunday Lunch

With almost all the pubs and restaurants in town offering a traditional roast dinner, Christchurch can be busy on a Sunday afternoon. Booking is recommended to get a seat at the popular spots and with each of the pubs offering a slightly different experience, it’s worth trying out a few options. There’s a Toby Carvery at the Cooper Dean Roundabout and another on Lyndhurst road out towards the New Forest or you can take your lunch the way it’s been done for centuries, in a traditional English pub. For an extra special experience there’s nothing like driving out to one of the charming country pubs north of Christchurch on the River Avon.
