Meeting Modernism

This vibrant new exhibition will bring out from store some of our most popular early 20th century paintings, collected by the first curators after Annie and Merton’s deaths in the 1920s.

Stunning Dorset landscapes by locally – based artists such as Henry Lamb, Leslie Moffatt Ward and Maxwell Armfield will be exhibited alongside portraits and war art, by Stanley Spencer, Alfred Munnings, Graham Sutherland and John Piper.

Step back to the 1930’s and 40’s and judge for yourself how well early curators chose Modernist works to complement and respond to the themes in the Victorian collection.
